New regulations have now come into effect allowing a limited, seasonal fishery for gulper sharks between December 1 and June 30 each year. This marks the first time since 2010 that shark fishing has been legally permitted in the Maldives. While the government emphasizes strict quotas and monitoring, many conservation groups and divers have expressed deep worry, noting that gulper sharks are exceptionally vulnerable due to their slow reproductive cycle and critical ecological role.
